Same is same is same is another
The title initially referred to Gertrude Stein’s well-known citation: a rose is a rose is a rose.
In our times, where we are confronted to countless reproductions of images the singular meaning of the images itself seems to disappear. But we all know there is a difference between lemon and lime. I am an artist who tries to research these fields by using well-known structures and transform them into new context. Building these new constellations, I hope to provoke people finding new point of views as well as extending my own way of thinking.
The “stories” concept is an attempt to transform the cinematic structure of images and time into 2 dimensional images. First time in 2002 I “translated “some video footage of a city in Germany into the photographic format. That time a friend and media artist helped me by writing a computer program for this goal. Since then I am continuously doing similar researches, in the meantime I wrote the program by myself and continue translating films to images. The camera becomes a kind of brush to process, and me I feel more like a director than a painter.
The panoramic sculpture is a concept that I use since I was still student at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf in 1994. There this concept was first time presented during the “Rundgang” of the Art Academy and the following year at the Gallery Loehrl in Moenchengladbach. About that time the spheres where roughly structured and coated with polyester.
Since then a lot of technical changes took place: the analog character disappeared and the pictures are nowadays taken with panorama equipment, stitched on the computer, and this image is used to create a mapping that fits exactly on the sphere. The Panorama is calculated exactly in its size to fit on the ball, the glued and afterwards coated with plastics. It is still a collage, but not that strongly visible anymore.
The initial interest was rooted in the experience that all photographs represent sectors of images and contrariwise I was looking for a way to create a picture that excludes nothing. Thus, this search ended in the sculptural model of a sphere as a logical conclusion. In following works, I researched the theme “image and spatial concepts” over and over again and also the notion of the details and sectors of an image. As time passed, I realized that I have developed more interest about the concept “space and location in the image”, one could say the space within the image as an event and its character are the interest of my work these days.
