케이리즈갤러리(대표 리즈 김)는 박인혁, 백승수 재불작가 2인전 Beyond the Frame을 2023년 11월 10일 (금)부터 개최한다. 박인혁 작가와 백승수 작가는 프랑스 파리에 거주하며 활동중인 작가로, 전형적인 틀(Frame)안에서 머물기를 거부하는 현대미술에 대하여 다양한 의미의 틀을 문제 삼으며, 문제에 대한 자신들만의 답을 조형 언어로 제시하는 작품 활동을 펼치는 의미있는 행보를 계속 하고 있다. 이번 전시에서 관객은 문제를 제기하는 방법과 답을 제시하는 방식에서 보여지는 각자의 개성과 삶의 방식을 감상할 수 있을 것이다.
박인혁 작가는 풍경(Landscape)을 그리는 작가이다. 그에게 풍경은 흔히 생각하기 쉬운 자연의 풍경이기도 하지만, 내적 풍경이기도 하다. 그는 스스로 그러한 자연의 정제되지 않은 힘에 영감을 받아 그림을 그리기 때문에 그가 그리는 자연 안에는 작가의 내면이 담기며, 내밀한 풍경을 그려도 자연이 거기에 존재한다. 작가의 작품이 그대로 있는 풍경이 아니라 관람객에게 직접 다가오는 것처럼 보인다면 작가가 자연의 역동적인 힘을 자기 것으로 만들었기 때문일 것이다. 유순한 색감, 거친 붓 터치 속에서 그의 힘을 느낄 수 있으며 그만의 세계관을 엿볼 수 있다. 그의 작품은 그가 생각하는 자연, 즉 단순히 멈춰진 그림 같은 풍경이 아니라 풍경 너머에 있는 어떤 힘으로, 보이지 않는 힘으로 우리를 초대한다.
백승수 작가는 자신의 일상에서 우연히 발견한 폴리스티렌이나 주물을 뜰 때 몰드 제작을 위해 쓰고 남은 실리콘 같은 재료를 작품의 소재로 삼는다. 그가 재료를 인두로 태우거나 캔버스에 바르고 떼는 등의 반복 행위로 가치가 사라진 것들에 새로운 가치를 부여하고, 그 과정에서 자기이면서 동시에 자기가 아닌 의식 상태를 경험하는 과정은 마지 놀이에 빠진 아이와 같다. 관람객이 그의 작품 틀 안의 색과 형태 너머에서 이러한 작가의 모습을 발견한다면 그것은 아주 큰 경험이 될 것이다.
케이리즈갤러리 리즈김 대표는 전시를 찾는 관객들에게 다음과 같이 작품의 틀을 넘어서는(Beyond the Frame) 감상 방법을 설명하여 초대의 말을 전했다.
처음부터 작품 속에 담긴 의미를 찾기 위해서 노력할 필요는 없습니다. 처음부터 모든 것을 다 볼 순 없으니까요. 처음에는 그냥 눈에 보이는 대로를 편안하게 감상하고, 그 이후에 조금 다른 시각에서 바라보는, 작품을 바라보는 틀을 흔들기만 해도 충분합니다. 보이는 것 너머에 보이지 않는 것을 느끼기 위해서는 우선 보이는 것을 탐구하면서 점차 보이지 않는 것으로 나가야 합니다. 그것이 바로 틀을 넘어서는 첫걸음이니까요. 어쩌면 보이지 않는 것에 대한 추구는 보이는 것을 끊임없이 새롭게 보려는 노력부터 시작하게 됩니다. 관람객 여러분께서 작품에서 보이는 것들을 넘어서서 각 작가의 고유한 세계로 다가설 수 있기를 바랍니다.
재불작가 2인전 Beyond the Frame은 12월 20일까지 케이리즈갤러리에서 계속된다.

K-LIZ Gallery (representative Liz Kim) holds Beyond the Frame, a two-person exhibition of artists Park Inhyuk and Baek Seungsoo from November 10, 2023 (Friday). Park Inhyuk and Baek Seungsoo, who live and work in Paris, France, continue to make meaningful moves by taking issue with the framework of various meanings of contemporary art that refuses to stay within a typical frame, and presenting their own answers to the problems in a formative language. In this exhibition, the audience will be able to appreciate each individual's personality and way of life as shown in the way they pose questions and the way they present answers.
Park Inhyuk paints landscapes. For the artist, landscapes are natural landscapes that are easy to think about, but they are also internal landscapes. For the artist, there is not much distinction between nature and himself. Even if he draws nature, the artist's inner self is contained in it, and even if an intimate landscape, nature is there. Because the artist himself is inspired by such an unrefined power of nature to paint. If the artist's work seems to come directly to the viewer rather than the scenery as it is, it is because the artist has made the dynamic power of nature his own. In the gentle colors and rough brush strokes, visitors can feel the power of the artist and get a glimpse of the artist's unique worldview. The work invites us to think of nature as the artist, that is, not simply a stationary and picturesque landscape, but to a certain force beyond the landscape, as an invisible force.
Baek Seungsoo uses materials that he accidentally finds in his daily life as the subject of works, for example polystyrene or leftover silicone used to make molds for castings. The artist gives new value to things that have lost their value through repeated actions such as burning the material with an iron or applying and peeling it off on the canvas. By repeating the action, the artist experiences a state of consciousness that is both self and non-self at the same time. It's like a child's engrossed state of play. In this way, the artist's works sometimes appear as a Black (Noir) series, and sometimes as a Bloom series. It would be a great experience for the viewer to look beyond the colors and shapes within the frame and find the artist as a child immersed in play.
Liz Kim, Representative of KLIZ-Gallery, gave an invitation to the audience by explaining how to appreciate the artwork beyond the frame as follows:
You don't have to try to find the meaning in your work from the beginning. You can't see everything at first sight. At first, it's enough to just relax and see what you see, and then twist the way you look at the work, looking at it from a slightly different perspective. To feel the invisible beyond the visible, we must first explore what we see and gradually go out into the invisible. That's the first step of ‘Beyond the Frame’. Perhaps, the pursuit of the invisible begins with an effort to constantly renew the visible. We hope that visitors will be able to go beyond what is seen in the works and approach the unique world of each artist.
