1. ‘24 ELIZABETH ST’ 시리즈
24 ELIZABETH ST는 작가 스스로가 본인 모습을 촬영한 자기 초상 사진 SELF-PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY 시리즈이다. 시리즈의 제목인 ’24 ELIZABETH ST’는 스코틀랜드에 실존하는 주소이며 사진들의 배경이 되는 장소이다. 이곳은GLASGOW 시의 IBROX라는 지역에 위치한 아주 오래되고 값싼 공동주택으로 나는 이 공동주택에서 수개월을 거주하며 이 사진들을 위한 작업을 진행하였다.
Ibrox는 서로 다른 문화와 인종을 배경으로 한 사람들이 살고 있는 다문화 지역이다. 그러나 이 공동주택에는 이상하게도 입주자가 거의 없었다. 나는 텅 빈 공동주택에 거주하는 기묘한 경험을 바탕으로 거리에서 만난 평범한 사람들을 모델로 하여 가상의 이웃들을 창조하는 작업을 진행하였다. 다시 말해, 이 시리즈에 등장하는 인물들은 실제로 존재하는 사람들이 아니며 모두 작가에 의해 창작된 것이다.
나는 가면과 디지털 특수효과를 이용하여 타인으로 변장하고 그들을 연기하였다. 이러한 변장과 연기를 위해 나는 오랜 기간 많은 사람들을 관찰하고 그들처럼 되고자 하였다. 또한 나는 특별한 사람이 아니라 거리에서 쉽게 볼 수 있는 이웃 같은 이들로 변하고자 하였다. 나는 다큐멘터리처럼 최대한 단순하고 현실적인 이미지를 만들고자 하였다. 그럼으로써 관람객들이 사진을 통해 현실과 비현실을 동시에
발견하고 기묘함을 느끼기를 의도하였다.
이러한 작업의 목적은 상상 속의 극장을 만들고 그곳에서 배우가 되어 연기하는 예술가적 욕망의 실현만이 아니라 내 두 눈에 비친 이 작은 세계를 재구성하는 것이다. ‘24 ELIZABETH ST’에 거주하는 다양한 개성을 가진 주민들은 특정 장소를 향한 이해와 학습을 반영한다.
24 Elizabeth ST is a series of self-portrait photographs. The title is taken from a real address in Scotland and the stage of the series, an old, poor Scottish tenement in Ibrox, the district south of Clyde river, Glasgow. I lived in the tenement for more than 6 months, producing the project.
Although Ibrox is multi-cultural area where many people from different ethnic
backgrounds living, there were only a few tenants residing in the humble tenement. With the bizarre experience living in the empty building, I worked on making imaginary neighbors who were based on typical people in the area by using my own body. That is to say, all the characters in the series are fictional.
I impersonated some, disguising myself as them through masks and digital techniques. To impersonate others, I studied numerous people who did not appear very special but common and stereotypical, like familiar neighbours, and tried to make myself like them. I also attempted to imitate the plain and realistic format of documentary portrait photography in order to disturb audiences and make them discern the reality and the unreality in the pictures.
The purposes of the project are not only to realise my artistic ambition to be an actor in a theatre in my head but also to recreated the small world where was presented to my sight through becoming others. All the figures of tenants reflect my understanding and learning about the specific site, objects, people in Elizabeth Street.
2. 'WEST LAKE DISTRICT’ 시리즈
내가 머물렀던 항저우시 서호구 西湖区 (West Lake District) 서남쪽 외각의 전당가 转塘街 (Zhuantang town) 주변은 이제 개발이 본격적으로 시작된 지역이다. 이 지역은 이미 지어진 건물보다 앞으로 지어질 건물이 훨씬 많고 거주민들보다 건설근로자들을 찾기가 더 쉽다.
공사장 외부벽면에는 지금은 믿기 힘든 화려한 조감도와 광고들로 앞으로 이 지역이 어떻게 바뀌어 갈지 상상하게 한다. 지금은 벌판에서 건설현장의 굉음만 들릴 뿐이지만 얼마 지나지 않아 다른 개발지역처럼 새로운 빌딩과 아파트, 쇼핑몰 등으로 가득 차게 될 것이다.
내 작업은 바로 이 현장을 배경으로 이루어질 것이다. 이 프로젝트는 사진가가 스스로를 촬영하는 자기 초상 사진 시리즈 Series of Self portrait photography 가 될 것이며 나는 지 지역의 진정한 주민이라 할 수 있는 건설 근로자들로 분할 것이다. 타인의 겉옷을 입음으로써 나는 현장을 관찰하는 구경꾼이 아니라 현장의 일부로써 카메라렌즈에 비춰질 것이다. 그럼으로써 이 프로젝트가 도시화의 현장을 담은
기록 사진이면서 동시에, 그 현장을 바라보는 사진가의 시선을 반영한 연출 사진이 되도록 할 것이다.
Zhuantang town in the West Lake District, Hangzhou has recently been zoned a development area. In the area, builders and buildings under construction are easier to meet than residents and constructed buildings. Although only construction noise from open fields is heard for now, advertisements on walls on the construction sites are full of promotions for buildings, apartments and shopping centers in the near future. The selfportrait photography series 'West Lake District' is presently set in the town. For the photographic project, I aimed to appear as
characters of builders who are true residents in this area by dressing up as them. I sought to reflect my body on camera not as an onlooker, but as a part of the field. Thus, this staged photographic project depicting common people at specific sites
through the cameraman's own vision imitates a form of documentary photography capturing social aspects incontemporary China. |
