Martyn Thompson
Curator, photo artist
Choy’s most recent collection consists of two main bodies of work, which while are independent bodies of work, still demonstrate similar components, which in turn express Choy’s uniquely developed photographic style.
Choy’s lens based project, features color images as well as black and white, which combine both found and rendered portraits, upon which a lens is placed, before being photographed. Choy has acquired numerous portraits of himself from unnamed street artists and then used these in his compositions to reflect on his own consciousness. These acquired portraits are cut or folded and stapled upon public bulletin boards in public areas to let time take its toll on them. The heavily stapled bulletin-board backgrounds are in stark contrast with the images pinned upon them, and further allude to the fact that the original imagery is displayed in public spaces. The imagery that this conjures, hints at the inner emotions concealed within, and demonstrates a society that is in a constant state of flux.
The photographs often contain lenses which work to either distort or emphasize certain elements within the image. While most the images are not heavily textured, the use of the lens creates different focal areas, thus illuminating small details, such as the grain in the printed images. These lens images draw the viewer in to the work to allow further investigation of the details within the pieces. The amount of distortion provided by the lens is expertly considered, with sometimes only a small indication to its presence, and others leaving only the lens area within full focus.
These pieces ask the viewer to engage and break down the various hidden subtleties within the piece, to view it as a full composition that exclusively tracks the way Choy has been reflected, and the impact of his image placement on the societal spaces they occupy.
Choy’ssecondbodyofworkondisplayiswhathehascoined‘multiaspectmovingshoot’orMAMSwhicharecreatedbycontinuouslymovingaroundthesubjectmatter,capturingdifferentimages,fromdifferentanglesatdifferenttimes,allontooneframeoffilm.
The black and white images simplify the space somewhat, leaving space for the viewer’s mind to build up on the imagery, yet remain complex enough to present compositional challenges.
This technique creates an eerie feeling that not only displays the passing of time, but also demonstrates the artist’s ability to convey special awareness through the lens of the camera.
Choy’s choice of subject matter varies, from older buildings and city skylines to elaborate statues and walkways captured across Singapore, China and Korea.
In the real world, the shape of an object does not change, but depending on the angle of the camera, the time of the day and camera’s settings, these realities become indistinct when captured upon the film. We hold the knowledge of the true shapes and sizes, but from the first capture to the final capture, the physical and captured objects both accumulate time, thus adding depth and duration to the piece.
This pieces in this exhibition aim to express the true nature of the world in all it’s complexities, while remaining personal, yet impersonal at the same time, showing how time effects the perceptions of space, time and objects.
