These memories is that he did farming to tag along with his father who was farmer in his childhood, Landscape of a mountain village, and so on.
His deep love of nature come from cause that he was born and grew up in countryside. His home town is Hwasun in Jeollanam-do, and still he lives in this place. When his middle school student days, because of poverty of his family, he finally give up his dream of high school education. In march 1978, he entered in vocational training center for learning electricity by the hand of his father. While he worked in national electricity industry, especially he was fascinated with photo’s charm. Since 21 years old, he go around mountains and fields with his camera as a hobby, and receive a prize from Gwangju city development photo contest exhibit in November 2, 1992.
He said “Because I got incommunicable impression when I saw and felt Mother Nature, so I could show such images by my pictures”, also he said “Landscape of Pine trees of nationwide mountains is the best scene for all to see, not because photographer is country man from Hwasun, Jeollanam-do.” He said that his pine trees pictures are present from the nature, and he fall in pine's charm while he shooting it which sustain life without a drop of water. He wants to express dynamic, harmony, and lyricism by capturing composition of ascending angle such as spurt, entangled scene, and standing pine trees like as group dance through his works.
Eye-catching works in this exhibition is "Woman pine tree from Gyeonggi-do Pocheon and Gwangju Samdo-dong" that included photographer's point of view. These works have similar image as the walking figure of 'a woman who has beautiful legs'. Actually these works were made by camera angle changed up and down by rotating 180 degrees. When he saw these pine trees, he felt that these trees is 'It's a woman's leg which has beautiful curving', and he maximizes the image into these works by reflect feelings at the moment.
Photographer Kim Kyu-jong is a person who accomplished his dream of getting an higher education in his later years, he got degrees of bachelor, master, and doctor of Law major, and he used to lecture as outside Professor in Law. He started to study photograph himself, several years after he entered a disciple of the late Mr. Choi Byung-ho(Gwangju, Jeollanam-do). Since then during he went around to nationwide mountains for capturing landscape into his camera, he suddenly enlightened to the profound charm of 'Pine trees' which sustain life between the rocks. He began to take photo of pine trees in earnest since 2003 and focused in internal beauty of pine trees. Finally, he opens exhibition at Seoul City Hall Gallery in October 2015. The Stories of Pine trees by Kim Kyu-jong
Date : 2015.10.19 ~ 10.22
Pine tree is a representative symbol of tenacious hold on life in Korea, because this tree grow anywhere and does not favor to any ground. We used to brew liquor, build gazebo in forest for rest by Pine tree, brighten around to use a pine torch in dark night. Also we use pine needles for cooking rice cake to this day especially while Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving Day, and cure wound by cover this sap of pine tree. Thus pine tree is symbol of Korean spirit that band ourselves together.
For take these pictures of pine tree, I had to traveled all over the country. Finally, I could hold wind and sunshine which was break through pine tree in my photos.
I focused on that capture impression honestly from the nature during take pictures. Therefore I was inspired from like this urgency in the field for capturing like this moment and this impression entirely reflect on picture works.
I want to get vigorous sympathies when I felt that moment in shooting with many people by exhibiting these pictures of pine trees which I shoot with very much passions. Also I want to seize the opportunity that look back to pine trees which losing a noble caused by can easily see domestically.
My first one man exhibition “The Stories of Pine trees” is made up composition of the subject matter to symbolize longevity and various angles about implication of Pine trees. And it’s finally completed after long waiting of creative activity over 35 years. I wanted to ask what it is that makes a sweetly calm life in our lives by expressing the vitality and the beauty of existence of Pine trees that can not easily analogize in reality through metaphor and implication in my photos.
In addition, I want to express differently other professional photographer about the way of living nobly as creature. In my pictures, I tried to express human‘s loneliness and fierce life that revealed in nature from the space of "life" living amongst the rocks, and communications and sharing emotions in human nature from facing or intertwined Pine trees.
I am ashamed to write down but I get some assesment about my pictures as follow : Eastern thought is prominently reflected pictorial representation about a pine trees as a subject, it has highlighted the spirit that exists inside in the photo creation, but also the Pine trees were expressed in priority poetically about the situation that face to face with nature and human.
I used to find again the hope to live in this world by look at the feast of Pine trees in the snow, wind, and fog, and vitality of tenacious hold on life which take strong root in rugged land and between rocks. I hope so much everyone who come to my exhibition to feel hopes like me and put in their hearts when they going back.
