¡ºConsidering the Basic Necessities of LifeThrough Art¡»

#1. Clothing_Telling / #2. Food Scape / #3. Space In & Out

<Space In & Out> is the last exhibit of the tripartite series ¡ºConsidering the Basic Necessities of Life Through Art¡», which was organized to examine via photography the meaning of three most basic necessities of human life: clothing, food, and shelter. <Space In & Out> intends to share contemporary artists’ perspectives on various living spaces.

Residential area, architecture and cityscape have already been the subject matters of various artistic expressions by photographers and other artists. This particular exhibition hopes to reinterpret the meaning of living spaces through four contemporary artists: Kyoung Duk Kim, Jinho Kim, Chanson Park and Moonho Lee living in Korea.

Kyoung Duk Kim evokes the fact that our daily life is actually the repository of discovery and the medium which awakens us of our existence by revealing the hidden meaning of ordinary private spaces which we take for granted.

With anonymous space created without any specific character, Moonho Lee reminds us of common errors of visual perception and guides us to have a new perspective on ordinary surroundings.

Jinho Kim focuses on modern Korean houses which look similar at a glance, but each construction in fact has its own formative character with its own color composition and architectural structure. By taking these modern constructions, Kim reveals typical lifestyle of both region and house owner and the historical traces of Korean modernization.

Chanmin Park uses house as the symbol of wealth and property as he attempts to portray the common desire of the contemporary people. The apartment homes without windows signify the standardized lives of contemporary people and, at the same time, Park's photographs reveal particular tastes and lifestyles of the people living in that place.

<Clothing-Telling>in 2014, <Food-Scape> in 2015 and <Space In & Out> in 2016 complete the series ¡ºConsidering the Basic Necessities of Life... through Art¡» at Art Space J. Art Space J hopes that every audience member has a chance to reconsider the meaning of the basic necessities of life, as well as appreciate the contemporary artists' diverse insight shown through their artwork.
