Han Wan-soo, takes a step toward the dream to be the photographer.
Park Tae Sub Editor in Chief, THE SPOT PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINE
As writing the comments and appreciation on the photos of Han Wan-soo, I firstly would like to say “I envy her a lot.” I have never dreamed about the exhibition with the story which I would like to express as making the magazine related to photo for 10 years and I have never tried to do it. It is very envious of the private exhibition with own photos as the person who like photos. Furthermore, I can’t help applauding such enthusiasm and wills to hold the exhibition with the works created as the hobby not the main job without respect to the quality of works.
The photos under the theme “Landscape in My Heart” show the landscape in Korea. The places where we want to visit if possible from Jeju island to birch forest in deep mountain in Gangwon-do are deployed in front of us. As appreciating the photos, you will feel peaceful and calmness even if you are not there. Han Wan-su made almost all works during weekends, the relaxation time. Comfort and relaxed feeling during weekends which she enjoyed are expressed on her works, as if we were with her on those places.
Like the textbooks showing that we have to take photos in a certain way when visiting a certain place, all works are well organized. Her photos say everything about time, light, structure and what it is good to be added. It is frequently said that “the most perfect design is what has nothing to be excluded.” Such a word is for her photos. Including sunlight casting on each tree in birth forest and thin fog enhancing the delicate mood with the perfect reflection, she didn’t miss any trivial things which might make her works felt empty if those things which were not the main targets didn’t exist. The reason why she didn’t miss such decisive moments is her diligence, strict preparation and pure enthusiasm. It is not possible to make such photos in the exhibition if she wasn’t diligent even though she loved photos. She might wait for decisive moments with the heart fluttering as setting the tripod before the sunrise. She couldn’t have slept during weekends when everyone might enjoy comfort on the beds, as being anxious of losing the fog in the dawn she eagerly waited for.
We can imagine as watching her works containing her love and enthusiasm on photos. “She draws the scenes which she wanted to catch with her camera. She always watches the news related to weather as waiting only for weekends, the only time when she fully enjoys taking a photo. The weather forecast says clean sky as heavy snow goes away from Gangwon-do this weekend. She wants to go to a certain place after heavy snow. It is a mountain in Gangwon-do which she gets information from an acquaintance. After heavy snow, we can catch the scene like a ink-and-wash painting as trees with bare branches are well harmonized with pine trees. She goes up the mountain without a path with heavy equipment on the shoulder. The scene which she clicks the shutter thousands times in the head to take in her camera appears in front of her. She may automatically exclaim every time when she clicks the shutter with heart-throbbing emotion and fluttering heart at that moment.”
One thing to be desired is that substantial amounts of her works used the structure and expression what we saw in other places. Thus, her unique expression is not noticeable because her works are considered as merely beautiful photos which we are accustomed to. It is the photographic power of Han Wan-su and attraction of her works. As I described above, the works of Han Wan-su shall be appreciated not by evaluating how much better her works are than others, but in which way she has loved her photos until now. She will know that this exhibition is not the all about her works nor the full stop for her works. Then, we will watch and encourage her undying enthusiasm on photos and remarkable growth in the future. I expect her next works which made me comfortable and peaceful only by watching her works.

The one who enjoys taking photos with enthusiasm is formidable
Shin In-seop Multimedia Desk, Jungang Daily
A colleague suddenly asked me a favor. His acquaintance was an amateur photographer and was having her first exhibition. He gave me a bunch of photos and asked for comments on them or a letter of recommendation to be included on the catalogue. I interviewed her over the phone to identify who she was before writing about her work.
He said she printed the photos herself. It is like development analogue pictures in a darkroom in the past. It is not easy to have a printer nowadays. I felt the photographer’s enthusiasm through her explanation of how she developed her photos by purchasing expensive devices.
The photos to be displayed were landscapes. First, her works were so excellent. About half of photographs had characteristics of abstractness. There were some pieces which I wanted to see from a different angle or crop in a different way. However, it is only my point of view. It is not meaningful to say something now because many viewers will have different opinions about her artwork.
An exhibition is to show one’s work to the world where unspecified individuals live.
Unlike general industrial products for which producers have to consider the consumers’ taste, it is the exhibition that a producer’s taste or insistence is presented as it is without being changed. Consumers are diverse. After all, people are saying all kinds of things. A producer must tolerate such views.
If the first exhibition causes substantial pain, the producer must endure such pain.
On the contrary, even if more people give a compliment than criticism, the artist should not take such a compliment too seriously. The artist can continue onto the second, third or more exhibitions and advance further with such a attitude.
She said she was happy. She said she always waited for holidays so that she could have time to take photos. She said the landscape at dawn or at night made her feel peaceful. She said that these were good times for taking photos.
As taking a photo which cuts a moment to remember, she reaches to the level which she can select that moment.
She said it would be all right if she couldn’t take a photo because of poor landscape.
She said it was enough for her to feel nature. She didn’t take a photo. She just enjoyed the travel for taking a photo.. However, she was enthusiastic. The one who enjoys taking photos with enthusiasm is formidable. Like everything in the world, it is hard to win those who enjoy what they like, even with enthusiasm.
I hope she gains much from the first exhibition. All things, positive and negative, will be nourishment for her. As long as she keeps her enthusiasm forever and she enjoys taking a photo, we may meet a person who is worth remembering.

He tacitly insists that it is not necessary to go abroad
Gwak Yun-seop Photo Village, Special Contents Contest, The Hankyoreh
The first exhibition “Landscape in My Heart” by Han Wan-su presents the inner beauty of Korea.
It was the first feeling evoked by his work.
It was like watching a fashion show. There are no models in gorgeous costumes in the photos.
However, costumes of models are shown. It is as if celestial robes which fairies from the heaven removes to bathe are hidden here and there on this earth and are found by him
The artist Han Wan-su found that celestial robe and shows it to us. If we cut celestial robe and make clothing from it, all women who put them on would be changed to fairies. Indigo, jade and light yellow….the feast of textiles is deployed. We may see women wearing skirts with that textile on the street soon.
The pictures in this exhibition are classified into three themes, “Find beautiful light,” “Where wind stops,” and “Is it a dream?” The themes show the property of pictures as they are.
“Where wind stops” suggests the attempt to go beyond the limits of photography. Photos are a flat media depending only on vision. However, the artist tried to capture wind and sound in the photos. Wind blows in the pictures. Silver grass in Haneul Park moves on the wings of wind under the blue and yellow lighting. Silver grass tells blue and yellow wind sound as drawing the crescent moon. Wind creates waves by tickling the sea in Gimnyeong Beach on Jeju Island. The seaweed is rolling along the waves of the sea. We can hear peaceful and calm waves sound which doesn’t look dangerous at all.
The artist Han Wan-su prepared this exhibition with about 30 works which he selected most scrupulously from thousands of photos. It is the first step toward the world. He tacitly insists that it is not necessary to go abroad. His photos are soft and beautiful. There are various possibilities. We can expect more from him in the future.
