물이 쏟아져 내려 수면에 부딪친다. 고요했던 물의 표면은 격랑에 휩싸인다. 물과 물의 충돌로 솟아 오른 물방울과 물결은 아주 짧은 순간 우리가 예상하지 못한 형태를 이룬 뒤 이내 떨어진다.
정미수는 시각(視覺)이 미처 작동하기도 전에 사라져 버리는 그 찰나를 접사렌즈를 통해 카메라에 담아낸다. 이어 그는 온갖 형태의 물방울을 컴퓨터 모니터로 불러내 디지털 페인팅으로 그림을 입힌다. ‘워터드롭 아트’의 세계를 담은 사진집 ‘물방울 동화’는 그렇게 시작된다.
작가의 손길을 거친 물방울은 강아지, 고양이, 달팽이, 사자, 상어 등 온갖 동물로 변신한다. 이어 장미를 담은 화병, 농구공, 하늘을 나는 양탄자 등, 현실과 환상 속의 사물들로 바뀌어 나간다. 또한 영화배우 마릴린 먼로, 우아하게 춤추는 발레리나, 암벽을 오르는 등반가 등 사람이 되기도 한다. 정미수의 작품들을 연이어 보면, 동화에 나올법한 신기한 물방울의 나라를 여행하는 착각이 든다.
‘물방울 동화’ 속 그림들은 어른의 진지함이나 고상함을 보여주지 않는다. 카툰이나 애니메이션의 한 장면처럼 단순하고 명료하고 경쾌하다. 그래서 심오한 철학이나 작가주의를 내세우는 작품들에 반(反)한 포스트모더니즘 예술가의 팝아트 작품의 하나로 여길 수도 있다. 하지만, 정미수의 작품들 에는 겉으로 드러나지 않은 이야기가 숨어 있다.
정미수가 ‘물방울 세계’로 동심을 표현하고 있는 근저는 그의 유년기에 있다. 어린 시절 작가는 몸이 아파 밖에서 놀아 본 기억이 거의 없다고 한다. 늘 집에 머물며, 바깥 세상을 동경하곤 했다. 친구 들과 뒤섞여 노는 체험은 단순한 놀이를 뛰어 넘는 경험이다. 또래들과 어울리는 동안 아이들은 '전지 전능한' 창조자가 된다. 인형에 옷을 입혀 연극을 하고, 스스로 순정만화의 주인공이 되고, 목에 붉은 보자기를 두르고 우주로 날아가기도 한다. 점수도, 의무도, 제한도 없는 그 유년의 시절은 마음의 자유를 무한히 누리는 때다. 그런데 작가의 삶의 여정에는 그때가 비어있다. 그 빈 공간 때문에 작가는 지난 세월 동안 채워지지 않는 허기를 느끼며 살아왔을 것이다.
그런 정신적 공복을 메울 수 있는 길은 예술에 있다. 예술 행위에는 작가의 의식과 무의식이 녹아 들어 있어서 작품을 만드는 일 자체가 일종의 ‘치유의 과정’이 되기 때문이다. 정미수는 서늘한 물방울에 그림을 입히며 유년의 공백에 새살을 돋게 하고 있는 것이다.
‘물방울 동화’의 배경이 되는 물방울 세계는 인간의 눈으로 관찰할 수 없다. 감각기관이 인지할 수 없을 정도의 작은 규모로 천분의 일초 동안 벌어지는 현상이다. 작품에 등장시킬만한 장면을 얻기 위해서 작가는 접사렌즈 앞에 설치해 놓은 수조에서 물을 떨어뜨리고 셔터를 누르는 동작을 헤아릴 수 없이 반복해야 한다. 그런데 그 결과는 예측할 수 없다. 때론 동그라미로, 때론 네모로 자유롭게 형태가 바뀌어 나간다. 무언가 근사한 것을 기대하지만 아무 것도 나오는 게 없고, 그만둘까 싶으면 그럴듯한 것이 슬며시 얼굴을 내민다. 끊임없이 변화하고 주변 환경에 따라 다양한 모습을 보이는 동심과도 무척 닮아 있다.
정미수는 물과 물이 충동해 발생한 우연의 결과물에 맞춰 작가 내면에서 떠오르는 이미지를 페인팅 해 나갔다. 미술 전공자로서 학습한 감각과 유년의 기억과 본능이 어우러져 작품을 완성했다. 마치 의식의 흐름을 따라 이야기를 이어가는 소설처럼, 하나하나의 작품들이 연결되어 정미수의 잃어 버린 동심을 재현했다.
삶과 예술의 간격이 허물어진 21세기에는 정해진 예술가의 길이 없다. 누군가는 거대 담론과 대서사를 얘기하고, 누군가는 소소한 나의 이야기를 자기 방식대로 들려준다. 정미수는 심각해질 수도 있는 개인의 내면의 경험을 동화처럼 밝고 명랑한 이미지로 바꿔 드러냈다. 감상자는 그 유쾌함을, 작가는 그 과정과 결과물이 채워준 치유의 기쁨을 즐길 수 있게 됐다.
Fairy Tale of Waterdrop

Water pours down to hit the water surface. The once quiet water surface is now awash in turmoil. The water drops and waves that shoot up from the collision of water waves form shapes that we fail to anticipate for a fleeting moment before they drop.
With her macro lens, Jung Mi Soo captures the moments that disappear even before the visual sense is activated. Then, she imports variously shaped water drops to the computer monitor and applies images to them with digital painting. Thus begins Fairy Tale of Waterdrop, a photobook that carries the world of 'water drop art'.
The water drops that are touched by the artist transform into various animals such as puppy, cat, snail, lion, and shark. And they further turn into real or fantastic objects such as vase, basketball, and flying carpet. Or, they change into persons such as actress Marilyn Monroe, a gracefully dancing ballerina, and a rock climber. Looking at Jung Mi Soo's works in a row, one feels as if one were traveling in a fabulous land of water drops as can be seen only in fairy tales.
The pictures in Fairy Tale of Waterdrop do not portray the seriousness or loftiness of adults. Like scenes from cartoon or animation, they are simple, clear, and light-hearted. Therefore, they may be viewed as pop art works by some postmodern artist who is opposed to the works that espouse profound philosophy or auteurism. However, Jung Mi Soo's works harbor stories that are not shown outside.
Her childhood underlies the rendering of the childlike imagination with 'the world of water drops' by Jung, who is now in her middle age. The artist said that she never got out to play as she was sick. She had to stay at home, just longing for the world outside. Mingling with friends is an experience that goes beyond just a play. While mixing with their peers, children become the 'all-knowing and all-powerful' creator. They perform a play by putting clothes on dolls, become the heroes or heroines of teen romance cartoon titles, or fly into outer space, sporting a red muffler around the neck. Childhood as such that is free from grades, responsibilities, or restrictions is a time period when one enjoys unlimited freedom. However, the segment of the artist's life journey is empty. Because of that empty space, the artist must have lived the past years, feeling the hunger that is not satisfied.
And the way to fill the mental void lies in art. It is because the work in creating works makes a kind of 'healing process' as the artist's consciousness and unconscious melt in artistic acts. By covering the cool water drops with images, Jung Mi Soo effects the regeneration of her childhood blank.
The world of water drops that serves as the backdrop of A Fairy Tale Just for Myself cannot be observed with human eyes. It is a phenomenon that takes place for one-thousandth second in a tiny size that fails to be perceived by sensory organs. To obtain the scenes worthy to appear in works, the artist has to repeat countless times the act of dropping water from the tank installed in front of the macro lens and then pressing the camera shutter. But its outcome is unpredictable. They freely transform into random shapes such as circle or square. When you hope to see something nice, you actually get nothing, and when you feel like quitting, something plausible peeks outside. It bears a striking resemblance to the childlike imagination that keeps changing and whose appearance varies with surroundings.
Jung Mi Soo paints those images that arise in her heart in accordance with the casual outcomes from the water-to-water collision. Her works are completed through the blending of her tact learned as a fine art major, her childhood memories, and her instinct. Just like a novelist relates a story following the stream of unconscious, different works are connected to reenact Jung Mi Soo's lost childhood imagination.
The 21st century in which the border between life and art has no path set for an artist. Some relate a grand récit or epic tale, while others relate the little of their life in their own way. Jung Mi Soo reveals the inner experiences of individuals that may become serious by rendering them into bright and merry images. Thus, viewers can enjoy the merriment while the artist can get her fill of the joy of healing supplied by the process and its outcome.

한치의 요동도 없이 고요한 심연의 공간.
색을 머금은 물방울들의 설레는 낙하가 시작 된다 .
아름다운 충돌 후 피어나는 물꽃의 기다림.
동심원으로 번져나가는 미묘한 파동의 떨림들.
우후죽순(雨後竹筍) 솟아오르듯 마중물로 피워내는 물방울들의 절제된 몸짓을 본다.
인간의 눈으로 포착할 수 없는 찰나의 동결 뒤로 유년의 기억들이 스멀스멀 고개를 든다.
비가시적인 판타지가 동화 속 상상으로 태어나는 순간이다.
열 살이 되기도 전에 많이 아팠었다. 행복한 얼굴로 골목길에서 뛰어놀던 아이들을
슬픔으로 지켜보아야만 했던 유년의 기억이 내겐 아린 추억으로 남아있다.
다른 아이들에게는 당연한 일상이 한없는 부러움으로 다가와 홀로 아팠었다.
물방울 작업은 나를 동심으로 이끄는 만화경과도 같다.
정말 중요한 것은 눈에 보이지 않듯이 지난 추억을 유추하려 희미한 의식을 붙잡는다.
중력의 법칙을 거부하지 못하고 동일한 지점으로 추락하는 물방울들을 주시한다.
나의 Drop Art는 물의 형상에 주목하지만 통속적인 아름다움을 추구하지는 않는다.
수많은 노력의 결과물인 우연을 통해 만들어진 형상을 발견하고 상상을 그림으로 덧칠한다.
그 근저(根底)에는 통채로 사라진 유년(幼年)의 기억들에 대한
보상 심리와 그림을 전공한 흔적들이 중첩되어 있는 듯하다.
오늘도 일상의 습관처럼 수천 컷의 셔터를 누르며 동화 속 주인공들과 마주한다.
한강의 물만큼 족히 떨어뜨렸지만 늘 풀지 못한 숙제로 사진은 남아있다.
결과가 어찌 되었든 물방울은 부유(浮遊)하는 유년시절을 기억하는 나만의 내밀한 일기이다.

Laurel Flowers Bloom by the Falling Water.
The abysmal space that remains tranquil without a hint of a jolt.
The exciting drop of the color-filled water drops begins.
The wait of the water flower which opens up at the beautiful collision.
The trembles from the subtle waves that spread throughout the concentric circles.
I see the controlled moves of the water drops that are generated like the growth of bamboo shoots following a rainfall as if in priming a water pump.
The memories of childhood rear their heads behind the transfixed moments that cannot be captured with human eyes. They are the moments when invisible fantasy is born into a fairy tale.
Even before I reached 10, I was very ill. It was my hurtful reminiscence that I had to just sadly watch kids as they were happily gamboling around the alleyway. I felt it as a solitary hurt, because the natural daily routine for other kids got me so envious.
The water drop project is like a kaleidoscope that draws me to a childlike mentality.
Since really important things remain invisible, I put myself together out of my vague consciousness to infer from past memories. Unable to fight the law of gravity, I watch the water drops that drop to one single spot. My drop art focuses on the form of water but does not pursue vulgar beauty.
I put the picture from my imagination on top of the shape that is created through chance, an outcome of countless efforts. At its root, the need for compensation for the completely vanished childhood and the traces of painting as my college major seem to overlap.
Today, I handle the fairy-tale characters by pushing the shutter for several thousands of images as part of my quotidian life. I have dropped quite an amount of water so far, but my photography remains incomplete homework. Whatever comes out of it, the water drops make my exclusive intimate journal that remembers my floating childhood.
