Earth of Color <Author's Note>

Palouse is a region that stretches across eastern Washington and northeastern Oregon in the United States and northwestern Idaho. It is an area of fertile land where the Clearwater, Palouse, and Snake Rivers flow, and is known as the Palouse Hills or the Palouse Prairie. Covering 70% of the southern area, the Palouse region was once a tidal flat and sand dunes formed during the Ice Age, but now has transformed into a vast expanse of blue hills and ridges. There are few areas with a slope of less than 50%.

In the spring, the Palouse region appears to be dancing with its undulating hills and a grand display of green. From April to June, the green wheat fields magnificently spread out on light and dark brown soil in this triangular area of wheat fields. The reddish hills create a beautiful melody and harmony with the stunning land. While most people work from the Steptoe Butte State Park, located at an altitude of 1,100 meters, which offers a 360-degree view, I chose to take aerial photographs to capture the ever-changing colors and light.

To achieve free photography, I removed the airplane door and secured myself with a thick rope since a single safety belt was not enough, and continued to work in the early morning hours.

Looking down on the Palouse Hills from the sky, it is reminiscent of the giant Nazca Lines in Peru. The enigmatic Nazca cannot reveal its full picture on the ground, but one must take a plane and look down from the sky to see the entire picture.

The Palouse is filled with crops such as barley, wheat, and canola, miniature barns from farms, and tracks left by tractors, all of which spread out like pictures in a fairy tale.

I captured the curves, patterns, and geometrical shapes of the wheat field hills with my camera, as if sketching them at a rapid pace.

We come to know the value of existence through absence. When the wheat is full in the wheat fields, we cannot see the secrets of the seen and unseen through the colors of the land, but the land exposed and revealed by leaving it uncultivated represents the harmony between emptiness and fullness, revealing the secrets through color.

Resonance of Color <Artist's Note>

I witnessed a scene where light and color were intertwined, playing with the wind. At that moment, the word synesthesia came to mind.

Color, as a visual experience through light, transformed into sound and scent, awakening my senses.

In that space and time, I heard the sound created by the collision of light and colors. I lifted my camera, feeling infinite freedom in their gestures and expressions.

Like a conductor of an opera, my camera became a baton and a brush, creating a picture and an aria with light and color. It was always there, but it never looked the same.

The grass and trees in the mountains, which never looked the same even for a moment. The scattering and refraction of light reflected between leaves under backlighting. I visualized those fleeting moments in my mind and captured the freedom of lines moving with the wind in a dynamic way.

I wanted to create synesthetic images where colors sing, rather than reproducing natural light and color as they are.

I reinterpreted and expressed the resonance of changes in light and color as a visual and musical rhythm, rather than simply reproducing them.

The subject of my work is not an object in a static state, but the vibration and emotion shown by the movement of light (color). Unlike artificial light, natural light and color are abundant in the world. They provide us with comfort and abundance beyond words.

If the ice flower I expressed before represented the dignity revealed by the contrast and formal beauty of achromatic and chromatic colors, this work provides an opportunity to contemplate the movement and stillness of appearance and disappearance in nature. It makes us look at things in a new and unfamiliar way, stirring up the vitality of life. I hope this exhibition will not only satisfy our sensibilities, but also become a resonance of light and color that embraces the contradictions of our senses.

Earth of Color, the Vibration of Light

Choi Jae-hyuk / Exhibition Planner, Art Critic

Hong, Ju young is an artist who captures the beauty of light and color inherent in nature and objects and delivers it in the language of emotions through photography. In his past series, Ice Flower, he received great acclaim for expressing the human psyche through the colors of flowers frozen in ice. With his new works, The Earth of Color and The Vibration of Light, which he presents after 15 years, he expands his gaze beyond the human psyche to discover the beauty of colors that surround our lives. The earth of Color, found in the Palouse wheat fields of the United States, and The Vibration of Light, discovered on the beaches of San Diego, share the common theme of "light and color," but present different charms. Through this exhibition, where the two series meet in one space, we can see that Hong Ju young photographic world is becoming even more diverse.

The Earth of Color, Palouse

The Palouse is a hilly area in Washington State, USA. The Palouse region is a small city with a population of only 1,000, but is famous for its wheat fields that cover 70% of the southern area, an enormous size. This area was formed by the continuation of sand dunes and tidal flats created during the ice age, and the undulating terrain is full of vitality. Especially in spring from April to June, the dark brown soil, green grass, and yellow rapeseed flowers create a variety of melodies with their colors. The light and shadows created by the terrain and the secrets hidden in the earth create the picture that nature drew. The artist captured this earthscape through aerial photography. Although drones are now commonly used, the artist did not entrust the act of photography to a machine. He rented a small plane at the scene, removed the window and willingly took the risk of tying hisself to the body of the airplane. Even in the fear of flying at high altitudes, He could not overcome the wonder that the Earth of Color presented. Even in the swaying currents and winds, the artist kept the focus of the lens fixed and pressed the shutter with concentration. Of course, it did not end with j`ust one flight. Depending on the weather and atmospheric conditions, the artist flew every morning to obtain the best colors of nature that change constantly.

The artist has been observing the wheat fields for a long time while living in the United States. Although the season when the wheat is full brings richness, the period when it is not cultivated is when you can see the secrets of the earth. This is an important time when you can meet the naked colors of nature. The artist did not miss this opportunity. If the earth created the colors, the laborers drew the lines on it. By capturing the contrast between the colors of the earth and the lines drawn by laborers, the artist expressed a unique beauty.
