Line and Light
Hwang Seontae
Objects commonly encountered in daily life, and the fleeting consciousness that arises from colliding with those objects. This is the beginning of my work. In other words, I try to show the special lingering imagery of everyday life, which is mundane but not simple, by depicting very ordinary contemporary interiors. So, I would like to talk about the existence of reality that we see, know, and touch, and the reality of our perception. this will be attempted in a variety of ways in the future, but so far I have been working in two major aspects. Firstly, I have talked about the existence of objects through two-dimensional photographic drawings or glass drawings. In these works, I was interested in the way in which the ambiguity of the objects as opposed to precision, makes their existence much deeper. Secondly, I have attempted a detailed analysis of the shape of objects and their relationship with their surroundings through three-dimensional works (glass books, glass newspapers and so on) and installation works.
Line and Light
My work is bordered only by line, without colour and surface. Objects and spaces are interpreted drily, like the lines which appear neutral and flat without emotion, and mathematical symbols made up of those lines. By removing colour and surface and presenting objects only through lines, the concreteness of objects disappears, and only mathematical symbols designed as an indicator of these objects remains. And rather than a recreation of an object or an explanation of its realistic concreteness, it is perceived as a minimal presence that omits sensory suggestion or indication. The absence of detail creates a sense of anticipation, it merely indicates or refers to an object.
The screen is filled with light pouring through the window and forming shadows. That's all. however, the minimalism of the main interior remains. The absence of realistic textures within the line drawings create an experience of these objects 'just being there', they have no purpose. We are not drawn to the objects within, but rather what surrounds them and the way in which they are emphasised through the use of light. The light gives us an ability to understand the world shown through the window.
The Fictitiousness of the Description
There are limits to the depth of reality one can express through description. Despite this, there are many expressive elements one may use, among which I chose 'line'. In visual art, line is the most primitive and basic means of expressing an object. I restrain from using other means of expression in order to control my emotions, and to remove personal feelings, so the focus is the object itself. As the number of techniques of expression increases, I become immersed in the method of expression, and degenerates into a product of my emotions therefore distorting the focus of the object itself.
Line is just concept. When we see an object, we recognise it as a form defined by lines, but the object itself is not an actual line, nor is it made by lines. The line acts as a symbol.
The act of drawing outlines is like the act of writing texts to depict an object. In my work, line means an act of writing, not drawing and the line itself is also an exists in its own right. I create a fictional space by throwing the objects symbolised through the lines (signs) onto the screen.
Hidden Time and Light of Specific Space
Light. The object that our sense of sight accepts is possible to exist because of natural light. A world without light cannot provide shape and texture. The light of reality enters the screen, which is defined as concept. Light penetrates between lines and into the space. The objects comprised by line brings the hidden life into reality and it gains a substance (By acquiring a three-dimensional space on the drawn plane, it obtains a real body). This space is realised through two things. Initially, the space is revealed by light on the conceptual screen that is interpreted as lines, and the other is the space of the artwork made of the box, that is, the three-dimensional space of light, which unfolds on the surface of sandblasted glass. (created by the cloudy surface of the sandblasted glass and the light trapped within the thickness of the glass plate).
This three-dimensional space is ironically trapped again within the quadrilateral screen.
This is not a space depicted with lines, but rather the possibility that a monotonous line drawing can become a reality with a single light, gaining feature and continuity as a three-dimensional object.

A Review of Artist Seon Tae Hwang
The Light Being
Seon Tae Hwang, who has long explored the essence of pure light, now turns his focus to the ‘existence of light itself.’ His artwork predominantly features light, frosted glass, and lines, combining undefined materials to evoke the ‘possibility of healing.’ To be alive means to possess ‘mobility’ or ‘dynamism.’ The artist has transformed the way we perceive existence into a realization through ‘spatial installations, glass sculptures, glass photographs, and light,’ culminating in his current body of work. Even while exhibiting experimental sculptures in Germany, he never let go of ‘glass,’ a choice that naturally aligned with his quest to transcend physical concepts. The artist breaks through self-imposed physical boundaries, inviting us to meet the ‘living subject.’ He urges us to enter the true light of healing and peace by criticizing and reflecting on ourselves rather than others.
Heal with the energy of light and the balanced colors!
We experience different moments of time through the sunlight streaming through the glass windows. Sometimes the sunset casts a warm glow indoors, while at other times, gentle sunlight tickles our noses, transporting us back to the most beautiful times. The artworks, reminiscent of Baroque light brought into the modern era, invite viewers into a realm of comfort through 'balanced colors neutralized by glass.' Simple lines set between sandblasted tempered glass and the 'living light' paired with LED lighting extend the 'healing wavelength' to our entire surroundings. For the artist, the key is the act of leaving 'only the minimal essentials.' By depicting simple images from daily life with lines, the artworks simplify our complex lives, connecting the inner and outer aspects of our existence to a deeper understanding of life. In this context, light acts as a mediator that infuses dynamic energy. Thus, the works go beyond emotions, reaching the essence of 'being.' Here, the distinction between virtual and real doesn't matter. In a space filled with light, the light itself embodies the 'source of life,' embracing even the invisible qualities of change.
"My lines are a kind of text. I suppress emotions as much as possible and use the lines as tools. If lines represent expression, then light is emotion. Frosted glass serves as a channel and medium that amplifies this imagination. The light of the sunset displays all the colors just before life fades, while the light of the morning is clear and pure, revealing the existence of things. It is light that gives meaning to presence and absence. Perhaps existence and non-existence are the harmony and transformation of the universe. Thus, we observe the changes between day and night, the cycle of life and death in humans and all things, and the transitions of the four seasons. In this journey to find light, just as I seek the value of existence through materials, I hope viewers encounter a sense of comfort that allows them to affirm themselves."
