민화 속 ‘타래버선’—전통과 길상의 상징을 품다
한국 전통 민화에서 타래버선은 단순한 의복을 넘어 행복과 번영을 기원하는 상징으로 자리해 왔다.
길게 드리운 타래끈이 복을 엮어 온다는 뜻에서, 옛 사람들은 혼례·돌잔치·명절과 같은 축복의 자리마다 타래버선을 그려 넣었다.
최근 열린 K-민화 전시에서 타래버선을 주제로 한 작품이 큰 주목을 받았다.
섬세한 붓끝으로 표현된 흰 바탕과 곡선의 단아함, 그리고 풍성하게 드리운 타래끈은
> “오래도록 이어지는 인연과 복을 묶는다”
는 전통적 의미를 현대적으로 풀어냈다는 평가를 받는다.
작가는 “타래버선은 발을 보호하는 실용품이지만, 민화 속에서는 희망을 엮는 부적 같은 존재”라며
“일상에서도 전통의 온기를 느낄 수 있도록 현대적인 색채와 구성을 더했다”고 전했다.
이 작품은 전통 민화의 상징성과 생활미학을 현대 감각과 조화시켜
세대를 아우르는 한국적 미의 재발견으로 자리매김하고 있다.
Minhwa Depicts “Tarae Beoseon,” the Knot of Blessings
In traditional Korean folk painting, the Tarae Beoseon—ornamental socks with long decorative cords—symbolizes happiness, prosperity, and enduring ties.
The flowing tassels were believed to bind good fortune, making the motif a popular feature in paintings for weddings, first-birthday celebrations, and festive occasions.
At a recent K-Minhwa exhibition, a striking piece centered on the Tarae Beoseon captivated visitors.
Its pure white fabric and elegant curves, paired with richly detailed cords, offered a modern interpretation of an age-old emblem of blessing.
“The Tarae Beoseon may have started as a practical garment,” the artist explained,
“but within Minhwa it becomes a charm for hope, weaving relationships and joy into daily life.”
This work highlights how the symbolism and quiet beauty of Minhwa can seamlessly connect heritage with contemporary aesthetics, revealing a fresh appreciation for Korea’s timeless artistry.
