- 인천상륙작전 기념사업·학술·문화교류 등 공동 추진 합의

- 맥아더 4세 친서 전달… 세계 자유민주주의 도시와 협력망 구축 선언

인천광역시는 9월 16일 제75주년 인천상륙작전을 기념해 맥아더장군재단(General Douglas MacArthur Foundation)과 상호교류를 위한 업무협약(MOU)을 체결했다.

Incheon Metropolitan City Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok is receiving Arthur MacArthur IV's personal letter at the "Incheon Metropolitan City-Douglas MacArthur Foundation MOU signing ceremony" held in the city hall's interview room on the 16th.

1962년에 설립된 맥아더장군재단은 더글러스 맥아더 장군의 삶과 업적을 기리고, 그의 신념인 ‘의무, 명예, 조국’을 후대에 전하기 위한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 재단은 미국 버지니아주 노퍽에 위치한 맥아더 기념관(MacArthur Memorial)을 지원하며, 다양한 교육 프로그램도 운영하고 있다.

유정복 시장은 “인천은 자유와 평화를 향한 숭고한 이념으로 결집한 8개국 연합군이 피와 희생으로 지켜낸 도시”이며 “특히 인천상륙작전을 성공으로 이끈 맥아더 장군의 용기와 전략은 오늘날 한반도 평화의 토대가 됐다”라고 강조했다.

이어 “인천은 기억의 계승자로서 이 소중한 역사를 세계에 알리고 더 많은 나라와 협력해 한반도 평화 정착에 기여하겠다”며 “세계 여러 자유민주주의 도시들과 손잡고 평화와 협력의 네트워크를 구축해 나가겠다”라고 밝혔다.

레인즈 대표는 “맥아더 장군이 오늘날 대한민국을 본다면 민주주의가 굳건히 정착된 것에 큰 기쁨을 느낄 것”이라며 “오늘의 만남이 단순한 행사를 넘어 인천시와 재단의 장기적인 협력 관계로 이어지길 바란다”라고 말했다.

한편 재단은 이번 협약을 계기로 유정복 시장을 공식 초청해 교류를 이어나갈 계획이다.

Incheon Metropolitan City signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Incheon Landing Operation on September 16.

On this day, Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok had a conversation with Joseph Reynes Jr., CEO of the Foundation, at City Hall, and received a personal letter from Arthur MacArthur IV, the only son of General MacArthur.

The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for mutual cooperation, including ▲ joint discovery and promotion of projects to commemorate the Incheon Landing Operation ▲ development and exchange of public-private programs to strengthen the ROK-US alliance and contribute to the protection of freedom and peace ▲ exchange of academic, cultural, and educational affairs and holding joint forums.

Founded in 1962, the MacArthur Foundation is dedicated to honoring General Douglas MacArthur's life and achievements and delivering his beliefs, "duty, honor, and homeland," to future generations. The foundation supports the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia, the United States, and also operates various educational programs.

Incheon is a city protected by the coalition of eight countries, which rallied with a noble ideology toward freedom and peace, with blood and sacrifice, Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok said. "In particular, General MacArthur's courage and strategy that led to the success of the Incheon Landing Operation have become the foundation for peace on the Korean Peninsula today."

"As the successor of memory, Incheon will inform the world of this precious history and cooperate with more countries to contribute to the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula," he said. "We will work with many liberal democratic cities around the world to build a network of peace and cooperation."

"If General MacArthur sees the Republic of Korea today, he will be very happy that democracy has been firmly established," Raines said. "I hope today's meeting will go beyond a simple event and lead to a long-term cooperation between Incheon City and the foundation."

Meanwhile, the foundation plans to officially invite Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok to continue exchanges with this agreement.
